Mellieħa is the best base for the Blue Lagoon: it is the closest real resort to the Comino ferries at Ċirkewwa and Marfa, so you can be on the first boat of the day. Choose Sliema or St Julian’s if you want restaurants, nightlife and easy cruise departures; Buġibba and Qawra if you want lower prices; and Gozo if you want a quieter stay with Comino a 15-minute hop away. Comino itself has no hotel to book at present.
Where you sleep shapes your Blue Lagoon day more than almost anything else. From Mellieħa the trip is a short bus or taxi ride and a 20–25 minute ferry; from Sliema it is over an hour by bus before you even reach the ferry, or a longer cruise. Here is how the main bases compare.
The bases compared
| Base | Getting to the Blue Lagoon | Vibe | Price level | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mellieħa | Short drive or bus to Ċirkewwa, then ferry | Hilltop town plus Malta’s biggest sandy beach | Mid | Beach lovers, families, early starters |
| Marfa / Ċirkewwa | Ferry quay on your doorstep | Isolated resort hotels | Mid to high | Maximum lagoon time, divers |
| Sliema / St Julian’s | Cruise from the seafront, or long bus to Ċirkewwa | Busy, urban, lots of restaurants and nightlife | Mid to high | First-timers seeing all of Malta, nightlife |
| Buġibba / Qawra / St Paul’s Bay | Cruises and speedboats from the bay; shorter drive to Ċirkewwa | Package-resort, lively in summer | Low to mid | Budget travellers, families |
| Gozo (Mġarr, Għajnsielem, Qala) | Short ferry or boat from Mġarr | Rural, slower, scenic | Low to mid | Couples, walkers, repeat visitors |
| Comino | On the island | No hotel currently; camping only in the designated zone | n/a | Not an option for most visitors |
Travel times matter more than they look on a map. Malta’s roads are congested in summer, and the bus from the Sliema and St Julian’s area to Ċirkewwa crawls along the coast through Buġibba and Mellieħa. A base an hour closer to the ferry translates directly into an extra hour in the water, or into catching the first boat before the crowds and the cruise passengers arrive.

Mellieħa: best overall base
Mellieħa sits on a ridge above Mellieħa Bay (Għadira), the largest sandy beach in Malta, and is the closest town of any size to the Comino ferry terminal at Ċirkewwa. That proximity is the whole point: you can take an early bus or a short taxi ride to Ċirkewwa, catch one of the first Comino ferries and be swimming in the lagoon well before the cruise boats arrive.
- Pros: quickest regular access to Comino and Gozo; a sandy beach for the days you are not on Comino; good mix of family hotels, apartments and restaurants in the village.
- Cons: a long way from Valletta and the south; quieter evenings than Sliema.
Mellieħa also has its own tours: the Comino & Gozo, Blue & Crystal Lagoon Catamaran Cruise (4.8/5 from 308 reviews, from about $29, Oct 2026) and, for groups, the Crystal/Blue Lagoon, Comino & Gozo Private Boat Trip (4.9/5 from 391 reviews, from about $279 per group of up to 7).
Marfa and Ċirkewwa
If all you want is the Blue Lagoon and the sea, the Marfa peninsula at the northern tip of Malta puts you right next to the Ċirkewwa and Marfa ferry quays. There are only a few resort hotels here and almost nothing else, so you will rely on hotel restaurants or a car. Divers like it for the famous Ċirkewwa dive sites.
Sliema and St Julian’s: best for first-timers seeing all of Malta
Sliema and St Julian’s are where most visitors to Malta stay, and for good reason: a long seafront promenade, the ferry across to Valletta, hundreds of restaurants and, in St Julian’s, the nightlife of Paceville. The downside for the Blue Lagoon is distance. The public bus to Ċirkewwa can take well over an hour in summer traffic.
The fix is a cruise. The Strand in Sliema is the main departure point for Blue Lagoon boats, so you can walk to the pier after breakfast. Good options include the Blue Lagoon, Crystal Lagoon and Sea Caves cruise (4.5/5 from 8,574 reviews, from about $39, Oct 2026) and the faster Sliema to Comino Speedboat Blue Lagoon, Crystal Lagoon + Caves (4.8/5 from 157 reviews, from about $45). See all departure points in our best Blue Lagoon tours comparison.
- Pros: the widest choice of hotels and food; easy access to Valletta; many tours collect from here.
- Cons: furthest of the main resorts from Comino; busier and pricier.

Buġibba, Qawra and St Paul’s Bay: best on a budget
The St Paul’s Bay area is Malta’s package-holiday hub, with plenty of mid-range hotels and apartments, a busy promenade and lower prices than Sliema. It is about halfway between Sliema and Ċirkewwa, so both the ferry and the boat tours are closer.
Boats leave from the bay itself: the Comino Speedboat Tour: Blue Lagoon, Crystal Lagoon & Caves from Buġibba (4.9/5 from 103 reviews, from about $34, Oct 2026) and the Half-Day Scenic Catamaran Tour with Drinks (4.9/5 from 402 reviews, from about $69) are two of the best-rated trips in our list.
- Pros: good value; family-friendly; tours depart on your doorstep.
- Cons: built-up and less charming; beaches are mostly rocky.
Compare Blue Lagoon tours by departure point
Gozo: best for a slower trip
Gozo is greener, quieter and cheaper than Malta, and Comino is right across the channel. Ferries and small boats cross from Mġarr harbour to the Blue Lagoon in around 15 minutes, so the villages above the harbour, Għajnsielem and Qala, are ideal. Victoria (Rabat), Marsalforn and Xlendi are further away but still within an easy drive or bus ride of Mġarr.
Staying on Gozo makes the early-morning lagoon trick easy, and you can combine Comino with Gozo’s own sights, such as the Inland Sea at Dwejra, on the days in between. Gozo-based tours include Around Comino, Blue Lagoon, Crystal Lagoon & Caves (4.7/5 from 1,128 reviews, from about $33, Oct 2026) and the Boat Trip to Comino Island + Blue Lagoon from Xlendi (4.7/5 from 131 reviews, from about $39).
- Pros: closest to Comino of all; peaceful; lovely walking.
- Cons: you need the Gozo Channel ferry to reach Malta’s main sights; fewer nightlife options.

Can you stay on Comino?
Not in a hotel, for now. The island’s only hotel, the old Comino Hotel and its bungalows, is closed while a planned luxury redevelopment goes through planning and legal battles. In May 2026 Malta’s Court of Appeal sent the project’s permit back to the planning tribunal for reassessment, so there is no firm reopening date.
Camping is possible only in the designated Tal-Ful zone, under Environment and Resources Authority rules, with no facilities. For almost everyone, a base on Malta or Gozo is the realistic choice.
Getting around from each base
Whichever base you choose, check how you will actually reach the boat on the morning of your Blue Lagoon day:
- Public bus: routes 41 and 42 link Valletta with Ċirkewwa via Mellieħa, and route 222 serves the Sliema and St Julian’s side. Buses are cheap but can fill up on summer mornings.
- Taxi or ride-hailing: the easiest option for an early start, especially for families. From Sliema budget around $33.76 one way to Ċirkewwa; from Mellieħa it is a short hop.
- Tour transfers: some cruises and combo tours include hotel pick-up, which removes the problem entirely. Check the listing before you book.
- From Gozo: buses and taxis reach Mġarr harbour from anywhere on the island, and small Comino boats leave from the harbour itself.
Also consider how many days you have. On a short trip of three or four nights, a central base like Sliema plus one organised cruise is usually the most efficient. With a week or more, splitting your stay between Malta and Gozo lets you visit Comino from the quieter side and see far more of the islands.
How to choose: quick decisions
- Blue Lagoon is the priority and you want a beach too: Mellieħa.
- First time in Malta, want Valletta and nightlife: Sliema or St Julian’s, and take a cruise to Comino.
- Tight budget or travelling with kids: Buġibba or Qawra. See also the Blue Lagoon with kids.
- Want quiet, walks and the shortest crossing: Gozo, near Mġarr.
- Diving or very early starts: Marfa or Ċirkewwa.

Whichever base you pick, remember that in summer 2026 you need a free timed booking to land at the lagoon; our booking rules explainer walks you through it, and the complete Blue Lagoon guide covers the rest of your day.
Frequently asked questions
What is the closest town to the Blue Lagoon?
On Malta, Mellieħa is the closest town of any size to the Comino ferries at Ċirkewwa and Marfa. On Gozo, Għajnsielem and Qala above Mġarr harbour are the nearest.
Is it better to stay in Sliema or Mellieħa for the Blue Lagoon?
Mellieħa if the Blue Lagoon and beaches are your focus, because it is much closer to the ferries. Sliema if you also want Valletta, restaurants and nightlife; you can still reach Comino easily on a cruise from the Sliema seafront.
Can you stay overnight on Comino?
There is currently no hotel to book. The old Comino Hotel is closed pending a disputed redevelopment, and camping is only allowed in the designated Tal-Ful zone under strict rules.
Is Gozo a good base for the Blue Lagoon?
Yes. Boats from Mġarr reach the Blue Lagoon in around 15 minutes, Gozo is generally cheaper and quieter than Malta, and you can easily take an early boat to beat the crowds.
Do I need a car to reach the Blue Lagoon?
No. Buses run to Ċirkewwa, and many Blue Lagoon tours depart from Sliema, Buġibba and Mellieħa or include transfers. A car mainly helps if you stay in Marfa or rural Gozo.
